Product Categories

Products can be organised into categories. This article explains how to create categories, and assign products to them.

Overview


Products can be assigned to a category or multiple categories. There are several benefits to using categories:

  • Refining the Product List quickly,
  • Categories are used as the header categories on your B2B site, and
  • Promotions can be applied to categories - see Promotional Matrix.

We do not recommend using categories for reports however, because products that are in multiple categories may be double counted. To filter your reports, it is better to use Brand, Type or Project Name.

Creating a Category


 

Creating a new category is simple:

  1. From the Left Navigation, choose Products.
  2. Click Create New Parent Category.
  3. Enter the category name in the box provided.
  4. Click Save and Close.

To edit a category after you have created it:

  1. Click on the icon to the left of the category name.
  2. Make any changes necessary, then click Save and Close.

Creating Sub Categories


A sub category is a category within a category. The top level category is known as the Parent category. To create a sub category:

  1. From the Left Navigation, choose Products.
  2. Choose the parent category by selecting it from the menu top right.
  3. Click Create New Sub Category button that appears when a category is selected.

    Note that the Parent Category dropdown box is populated with the chosen category. This can be changed if necessary to another parent category.
  4. Enter the category name in the box provided.
  5. Click Save and Close.

To edit sub categories after they have been created:

  1. Choose the parent category by selecting it from the menu top right.
  2. On the left-hand side, a list of sub categories appears.
  3. Click on the icon to the left of the sub category name.
  4. Make any changes necessary, then click Save and Close.

Assigning Products to Categories


To assign a product to a category:

  1. From the Left Navigation, choose Products.
  2. Click on the product name to edit the details of the product to be categorised.
  3. Click Update Categories, top right.
  4. Tick the appropriate categories.
  5. Click Save.

Assigning Products to Categories in Bulk


It is also possible to assign multiple products to categories in one go. You can also use this feature to unassign products from categories too. To do this:

  1. From the Left Navigation, choose Products.
  2. Tick the Products to be categorized.
  3. From the Actions menu, click Bulk Assign Categories.
  4. From the dropdown list in the screen that follows:
    • select the appropriate categories and sub categories
      - or -
    • alternatively, unassign products from their original categories by clicking Move List to Unassigned
  5. Click Update to confirm the changes.

Can categories be assigned when you import products?

Is it possible to import categories?

You can't import categories on their own - but as a workaround you could consider importing dummy products with all variants of your categories.
